It has already been mentioned that the main purpose of civil
law is to compensate by an award of damages, whereas criminal
law aims to punish.
The question of damages generally in contract and tort is
dealt with more fully on other pages (index),
but before dealing here in detail with the concept of punishment,
it is necessary to note three exceptional cases where civil
law aims to provide something other than compensation; indeed,
something more akin to punishment:
Contemptuous,
aggravated and exemplary damages
The three exceptional forms of damages are contemptuous, aggravated,
and exemplary.
