The Court of Justice of the European Communities consists
of ten judges, presided over by the President.
Each member State appoints one judge, who must have been either
a judge or a professor of law in the country from which he
is appointed.
The judges hold office for a period of six years, but their
appointments are renewable.
The UK, as one member State, is entitled to appoint only one
judge, despite the fact there are two distinct legal systems
in the UK, the English and the Scots.
